Bat Tower

very unique attraction, the Bat Tower, has a long history. The
property was acquired by Richter C. Perky. who intended to establish a
fishing camp there. In 1929, as a solution to the mosquito problem,
Perky built the bat tower to house the mosquito-eaters. Unfortunately, Mr.
Perky's bats flew off as soon as he placed them in his tower. |

Big Pine in the
Florida Keys is known for its Key Deer. If you are driving through
the keys, stop and visit the National Key Deer Refuge. In the Winn
Dixie Plaza in Big Pine, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service operates an
information center on the Key Deer and its habitat. (Directions: Go
north on Key Deer Blvd. or Wilder Road. The information center is located
across from the Winn Dixie in part of the strip center.)
