At a cost of $1 million dollars a year, The Pelican Man's Bird Sanctuary, located on City Island, rescues 4,000 - 7,000 birds, mammals, and reptiles each year. Their goal is to rescue animals, rehabilitate them back to health and release them into their natural habitats. There are over 65 species of permanently handicapped birds and reptiles on display.

Myakka River State
Park is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks. The "Florida
Wild and Scenic" Myakka River flows through 45 square miles of
wetlands, prairies and woodlands. Myakka is popular for hiking, fishing,
camping, and wildlife observation. The park is open every day from 8 AM
until sunset.

This current manatee facility
opened in November of 1993. Designed to exceed federal standards, the
Parker Manatee Aquarium provides a medication pool, as well as both above-
and below-water viewing. An exhibit hall within the facility helps
to educate patrons about manatee anatomy, physiology and habitat, as well
as the challenges faced by this endangered species. A meeting
room/classroom with underwater viewing is also available.
